West Rose can help your school or organization to address issues with culture/climate, equity, mental health, and trauma-informed practice.
For 10+ years, I have conducted community-engaged Social Work research focused on mental health, childhood trauma, racial trauma, and trauma-informed interventions in an effort to inform practice and policies in schools and other youth-serving organizations. I served as a co-investigator and evaluator on both small seed grant-funded projects, as well as several multi-year, multi-million dollar, federal grants, funded through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and Department of Education. My research has been used to inform the development of a teacher preparation curriculum to equip teachers candidates with trauma-informed tools and knowledge. My work has also been cited in multiple state-level policy and practice briefs, and also informed the proposal of a federal bill, H.R. 1757-Trauma-Informed Care for Children and Families Act of 2017.
I have made numerous presentations, both nationally and locally, to train educators on childhood trauma, race, and trauma-informed practice. Additionally, I extensively published my work in peer-reviewed journals such as the Review of Research in Education, Preventing School Failure, and the Children and Youth Services Review. Most recently, I collaborated with two Australian trauma scholars to co-edit and co-author a book entitled, Understanding and Implementing Trauma-Informed Practice in Schools: An Evidence-Based Guide, with an interdisciplinary and international focus.
Outside of academia, I have done on-going consultation work with schools and community organizations, delivering workshops and training, and facilitating implementation and evaluation services to address mental health, trauma, trauma-informed practice, equity, and organizational culture/climate. I have worked with numerous schools and school districts, including the largest school district in the state of Kentucky (i.e., Jefferson County Public Schools) to evaluate school climate, train staff on education equity and trauma-informed practice, and to implement organizational change. I have also conducted training and program evaluation for Be The Change, LLC (Louisville, KY), the Center for Trauma Resilient Communities (Winston-Salem, NC), and the MONARCH Model in schools in Detroit, MI & throughout Los Angeles, CA.
